F-16 Recovery Operations Complete in Michigan, Environmental Remediation Planning Underway

ALPENA, Mich. — The Michigan National Guard concluded aircraft recovery operations Tuesday in Green Lake Township following the Sept. 17, 2026, F-16 Fighting Falcon crash.

The next phase is underway, which includes evaluating site conditions to address potential environmental impacts and determining the appropriate remediation measures. The scope and timeline will depend on assessment results, contractor selection, and coordination with the appropriate environmental and regulatory authorities.

“Our immediate priority was ensuring the safety of the site and surrounding community,” said Brig. Gen. Daniel Kramer, commander of the Michigan Air National Guard. “As we transition to the environmental remediation phase, we are committed to working hand-in-hand with our state and local partners to ensure the land is thoroughly restored.”

The Texas-based aircraft crashed near County Road 633 and Jeffery Place. Airmen have installed snow fencing around the crash site perimeter to help identify where the remediation and restoration work will take place.

The Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center continues to work with state and local entities, including Grand Traverse County officials and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

For public health information related to the crash, residents can refer to the Grand Traverse County Health Department's media releases.
